Why Vintage?

Why would anyone want to wear vintage clothing? First of all, it’s fun! When you wear vintage, you stand out from the crowd. The chances of someone else wearing the same exact outfit to that special event are slim to none. More and more high school girls are shopping vintage for dances and proms because it guarantees originality. Yasmine, a vintage clothing collector from Los Angeles, says, “I wear vintage so I can add a little something authentically retro to my clothing and not look the same as everyone else, which is difficult in style-conscious L.A..”

Vintage clothing is also nostalgic. Remember the good old days when there were party lines and soda shops? Me neither, but wearing vintage gives a girl the chance to experience a small part of history. In today’s ambiguous world, it feels nice to pull on a crinoline and full feminine skirt once in a while. Let’s face it: grown-up girls like to play dress up, too!

For the thrifty, the prices on vintage items should be incentive enough. Local thrift stores, flea markets, and yard sales are excellent sources of old clothing at unbelievable prices. Broke? Go volunteer to help clean out grandma’s attic! I’ve gotten several vintage pieces handed down to me since I began collecting about two years ago.

Online Shopping

The internet has made it easy for vintage clothing enthusiasts to comparison shop and buy items that may not be available in their area. Type “vintage clothing” into any search engine and you’ll get hundreds of results. There are a few things you should know before purchasing vintage wear online, however.

Carol, owner of Dandelion Vintage, a fun and inexpensive online Vintage Clothing shop based in New Jersey, recommends that first-time buyers be aware of what it means to buy and wear vintage clothing. “It’s not like something new and fresh from Macy’s, it’s going to feel different and smell differently (there is no “new” clothing smell) and the items do need to be treated a little more carefully,” she said, adding that customers should always ask questions up front about the garments, especially if they are unsure of the size or condition. When shopping vintage online, she says, be sure to read the site’s terms of sales, ordering procedure, and return policy before ordering.

There are many different styles and eras to choose from. Items from the late 19th century on up through the 1980′s are available. Whatever your style, you’re sure to find something to suit you. Carol suggests customers buy what they like and avoid following trends, which is excellent advice when it comes to collecting of any type.

Making it Work

Vintage clothing can be teamed up with modern apparel or mixed and matched with other vintage pieces. Back in L.A. Yasmine says, “I find that wearing head to toe vintage is just not practical in day to day life, but by adding a few pieces I can create a look that is uniquely my own. I often buy high-end designer shoes and team them with a $1.00 vintage dress and a Gap cardigan. The look is pulled together and definitely mine.”

The mere mention of the name “diabolo” raises eyebrows when mentioned to any Spanish speaker because the word, “diablo” means “Devil” and has a Latin origin. Let’s clarify that the origins of the name of this great toy are from the Greek words meaning “through” and “throw” or dia and bollo respectively.

The Diabolo has been mentioned in Chinese literature consistently since the third century. The Chinese are known developed their own version of the diabolo that whistles. Hence the Diabolo is also known as the Chinese Yo-Yo.

The European version of the Diabolo was introduced at the world fair just after 1900 and became popular soon thereafter.

What is a Diabolo

A European diabolo is an hour-glass shaped toy that is balanced horizontally on a string which is tied to two handsticks. The player moves the handsticks so that the diabolo spins. As the diabolo spins on the string the diabolo can be maneuvered to perform many amazing tricks. 

The diabolo can be thrown up in the air and caught on the string, it can be tossed in order to land on the hand stick while spinning (grind). It can be tossed around and around a leg, arm or neck. It can even be thrown 20 feet in the air and caught on the string (with the diabolo player doing a 360 while waiting for it to land back on the string). 

Let’s Get Started

The great thing about diabolos is that it doesn’t cost a lot of money to get started. We recommend the Millenium Diabolo and a pair of wooden hand sticks to start with. This way you are getting a good diabolo that serve you well as you increase your skill. 

When you are more experienced, do the following:

1. Upgrade your handsticks. Your performance will improve instantly. Either the Henry’s Aluminum, Energy, or the Extreme handsticks are great for beginners through professionals. 

2. Learn new tricks by looking at our diabolo tricks section, watching videos on utube.com or buying a video from our other diabolo accessories section.

3. Next, buy a professional-level diabolo. The Finesse Diabolo is a great diabolo because you can add on many great accessories. There are lights, balance weights, finger grinding inserts, and lots more. Many of the performers use this model and are able to wield two or three at a time and even pass them back and forth to other performers.

While diabolos look similar, very minor differences can affect the usability of the diabolo.

The Human Love Affair With Jewelry

Man’s love for ornaments goes back to the earliest days of human civilization. Starting from the ancient Egyptian rule to the medieval days of Chinese empire, and ranging as far back in the ancient era when the indigenous populace solely occupied America, we have sufficient proof to showcase how men and women wore all forms of ornaments. Kids Homemade Party Hat Ideas

Try these one-of-a-kind kids homemade party hat ideas for your next kids party. From fancy bonnets to sombreros, wizard cone hats to princess crowns. Learn how to make them all with simple craft and homemade materials.

FANCY TISSUE PAPER BONNET

Have child sit to be “fitted” for their bonnet. To form the hat’s crown, place three pieces of 25 to 30 inch wrapping paper and/or colorful tissue paper on child’s head. Newspaper works fine too. Make sure the right side of the bottom paper faces down, so the underside of the hat will have color/pattern too. For a taller hat, place a rolled newspaper ball on child’s head before fashioning bonnet.

Arrange the papers at different angles so the paper points are fanned out in different directions. Wrap masking tape around the child’s head a couple of times at approximately ear level. Next, trim or roll the newspaper up to form the hat brim. For a derby hat, roll to within an inch or two from the band and add a feather. To make a floppy bonnet, glue a ribbon sash over the masking tape band and add silk flowers. For a sombrero, add a fringe of paper or fabric to the edge of the brim.

Encourage children to further embellish their hats with paint, markers, ribbon, crepe paper, silk flowers, fabric, gift bows, pompoms, buttons, sequins, etc.

CONE-SHAPED WIZARD OR PRINCESS HATS

Roll a heavy weight piece of paper into a cone shape. Tape or staple to secure. Trim bottom edge if necessary to give it a nice rounded shape. Decorate the hat with paint, glitter, and other embellishments. Use gift wrap or scrapbooking papers for specific themes.

For a princess hat, run a piece of tulle through the top of the hat, or hot glue some maribou(boa)trim to the bottom. For a wizard hat, use a solid color and decorate with foil moon, star and planet shapes. Glow-in-the-dark stars would work great too.

Poke a hole in each side of the hat along the bottom edge. Run a knotted piece of ribbon or lightweight elastic through each hole to hold on child’s head.

LITTLE PRINCESS HEAD WREATH

Cut a piece of cellophane wire to fit your child’s head. (This type of wire has foil shapes attached to it and can be used to decorative a package instead of ribbon) Take several pieces of curling ribbon, curl on end then tie to the back of the headband. Use bright complementary colors that will look really pretty flowing down your little girl’s back.

NEWSPAPER SAILOR HAT

Take one large newspaper sheet folded in half. You can also use wrapping paper for a pretty patterned hat, or plain paper to decorate on your own. A 16 x 19 piece is the right size to fit a child’s head.

Lay the rectangle on the table and fold each side evenly at a 45 degree angle to meet the middle crease. This makes a pointed top. Fold the bottom edges up, each to their own side, overlapping the two triangles. Tape to hold if necessary. Open up to try on your homemade hat.

VISOR HAT

Visors are an popular type of party hat. Inexpensive foam visors with an telephone-cord type band can be purchased from craft stores. They come in many bright colors and can be decorated with glitter paints and pre-cut foam pieces such as flower and bugs.

Make your own visor by cutting out the center of a paper plate to make a band to fit on the child’s head. Then cut the round plate center into a half-circle and staple it to the band. Decorate as desired.
